Breakdown of Outer Banks Beach Terms
When searching the MLS for homes on the Outer Banks it is helpful to define some of the terms used.
Mileposts – Little rectangular green and white signs located on the side of the road designated with numbers and the letters MP. Dare County Mileposts start at Wright Memorial Bridge and run south. The milepost designation covers the area from the ocean to the sound. When trying to find a location it’s important to know whether the destination is on the “Beach Road” (route NC 12) or “the Bypass” (US 158).
The town of Kitty Hawk runs from milepost 0-5.
Kill Devil Hills runs from milepost 5-9.
Nags Head runs from milepost 9-16.
South Nags Head and the Causeway runs from milepost 17-21.
Oceanfront – Nothing is buildable between the location and the ocean.
Semi-oceanfront- Located one lot back from oceanfront
Oceanside – Homes that are two or more lots back from the ocean
Between the Highways – Properties located in the area between NC 12 “Beach Road” and US 158 “the Bypass”.
Soundfront – Homes that front the Currituck or Roanoke Sound
Soundside – Homes one lot or more back from the sound
Canalfront-Usually homes that back up to navigable water access funneling to the sound
