Kill Devil Hills History and Information
Kill Devil Hills is the oldest township and the largest incorporated municipality in Dare County. Located just 90 miles south of Norfolk airport and about 200 miles east of Raleigh it is an accessible island town. Situated in the heart of the Northern Beaches, it is home to nearly 6,920 year round residents. One of the most popular questions visitors ask is how the name Kill Devil Hills came about. The origin of the name is a source of legends. One legend suggests that during the colonial period, the only surviving cargo washed ashore from a shipwreck was a brand of rum named Kill Devil rum. Another version of local lore alludes to the pirates, buccaneers and swashbucklers who inhabited the area sat on the dunes drinking a liquor “strong enough to kill the devil”
Attractions in Kill Devil Hills
The Wright Brothers National Memorial is found in Kill Devil Hills. It was funded by government dollars, proposed by the Committee on Appropriations, and erected in 1932. This, along with a visitor center serves as a tourist attraction which is visited by a half million people every year.
The Federal government chose to memorialize Orville and Wilbur Wright’s achievement with a national park. Commemorating the first powered air flight, a 60 foot granite monument stands on a 90 foot tall Dune known as “Big Kill Devil Hill.” In the visitor center you will find a full-scale reproduction of the 1902 glider and the 1903 flying machine. Spend a day enjoying the beautiful views from sea to sound while learning about the historic beginnings of flight. It is open seven days a week year round 9am to 5pm.
