General Information About Kitty Hawk
The town of Kitty Hawk was incorporated in 1981 and is comprised of a beach community with shops grocery stores, restaurants and a maritime forest. The origin of the of the town name of Kitty Hawk is a subject of debate. Some think it was a variation of the Algonquian word “Chickehauk”, or “Chickahawk” which was the name of the native settlement. The name means time or place to hunt geese. Another theory was that the derivation came from an early English pronunciation of “mosquito hawk” or “skeeter hawk” after the large mosquitos. In either scenario by the late 1700’s local residents spelled the town name on the deeds as it is today.

The Kitty Hawk Woods is one of the 5 maritime forests on the east coast and encompasses a total of 1877.2 acres of which 461.6 acres is owned by the town of Kitty Hawk. The woods are comprised of deciduous swamp, forest and marsh. There is a great diversity of wildlife, fish and rare plants.

Hurricane Isabel caused a great deal of damage to the newly renovated Kitty Hawk Pier. The Hilton Garden Inn purchased the pier in 2006 and reopened it in 2008. Weekly fishing passes are $30 and yearly passes run $125.
